WH Golf Suffers Loss Against Marshfield

Thursday night at Ridder Farm Golf Course was a memorable night for the Whitman Hanson Panthers.  Not only was it their last home match of the season, it was also their Senior Night celebration.  They hosted the visiting Marshfield Rams, who were able to leave victorious, 239-265.

Despite the loss, the team was gifted with perfect weather on their final competitive play at home.  Freshman Ryan Wojdag played some of his best golf, leading the team with a 6 over par, 42.  Right behind him was senior Derek Olson, who also played possibly his best round of the year, alongside Cooper Britton, who each shot a 7 over par.  Freshman Aiden LaPierre had his career low on the back nine with an 8 over par, 44.

With just one match left on the season (make-up match against Duxbury on Tuesday at Duxbury Yacht Club), it was a special night at home to celebrate the four graduating seniors: Captain Blake Belcher, Captain Ryan Hathaway, Sam Carron, and Derek Olson.
"Each one of these guys has changed the Whitman Hanson golf program for the better," said head coach Brian Dempsey.  "It wasn't the season we hoped for in terms of wins and losses, but the resilience, positivity, determination, and leadership that each of them showed day in and day out is something I'm so proud of."

Captain Blake Belcher (who is a two year captain) had an unmatched love for the game. It didn't matter what time of day it was, if he had the chance to play golf, he jumped at it.  He was a standout, playing the majority of the year as the team's number one golfer and reminded the team just how fun the game can be.

Captain Ryan Hathaway was the team's most selfless player.  He was the first one to offer his spot in a match to a younger teammate, and was consistently realistic and honest with himself and the team.  In terms of leadership, he was a quiet presence who always managed to keep his emotions in check.

Sam Carron has been a solid player for the program over the last few years.  His perseverance during match play is what you hope for in a player.  Always his own worst critic, Sam always found a positive from each round and tried to carry that with him into his next outing.

Derek Olson is in a class of his own.  His positive disposition, confident leadership and consistent improvement throughout the season was inspiring to watch.  His ability to lead by example, from the classroom to the course, set Derek apart in all the right ways, and has absolutely impacted his teammates and coaches.

Congratulations to the seniors; true gentlemen to the core.
